Position Title: Research Scientist (Open Rank), Cognitive Science

Location: Princeton, New Jersey, United States

ETS Research & Development has an opening for a Research Scientist (open rank) in the Cognitive Science Research Group who has expertise in the areas of learning analytics (including educational data mining), adaptive learning environments, and / or educational technology. Because of the group's emphasis on interactive, online assessments and learning tools, we are particularly interested in candidates that also have expertise in human-computer interaction, especially user experience design. Useful additional skills include some form of programming, particularly as it applies to prototyping or developing computational cognitive models.

The Cognitive Science Research Group has 21 members who investigate, develop, and apply cognitive science theories and methods to address learning and assessment research questions. Our focus is on understanding the cognition of learning in order to inform the design, implementation, and evaluation of assessment innovations and technologies, including game-based assessments, interactive simulations, and adaptive learning environments. We conduct interdisciplinary assessment research from a variety of perspectives within the cognitive sciences, spanning cognitive psychology, computational cognitive modeling, education, computer science, educational technology, and artificial intelligence.

Responsibilities include: • Contributing to the planning of a research agenda that draws upon the cognitive sciences and new technologies to advance the fields of educational or workforce assessment • Conceptualizing, proposing, obtaining funding for, and directing small projects and/or assisting in moderate-to-major ones. This includes managing, or participating in the management of, projects involving management skills such as staff assignment and scheduling, budgeting, and acquisition and utilization of equipment, facilities, and services. • Key collaboration in generating or contributing to new knowledge or capabilities and in applying that new knowledge or capabilities to existing and/or new ETS products and services for learning and assessment. New knowledge may take the form of new or modified educational or psychological theories; new methodology; new statistical, analytic or interpretative procedures; new learning and assessment designs, formats, and approaches; new approaches to evaluating learner achievements; and new approaches to reporting and providing feedback. New capabilities include developing software prototypes to instantiate new and existing knowledge.

Requires: • Ph.D. in a field related to cognitive science, educational technology, or similar area • Three years of progressively independent research and/or development experience. Candidates with less or more experience will be considered for the appropriate level position. • We are particularly interested in scientists with substantive research and/or development experience in educational technology, assessment innovations and technologies, computer science, education, and / or cognitive and learning sciences.
