How do I balance my classes with research time? Are there secrets to the job market that I don’t know? Where do I even start with this new leadership role? What is expected of me now? At every stage in an academic career, we are faced with new situations and unknown expectations. How do we find our paths when we don’t even know what it is we don’t know? Whether you’re a first generation student, international scholar, or a long-time faculty member taking on a new role, facing the unknown can leave us all wondering what questions we need to ask.
Panelists
Ira Hyman, Western Washington University
Michelle Rivers, Santa Clara University
Joo-Hyun Song, Brown University
Sharon Thompson-Schill, University of Pennsylvania

Social Hour with Speed Mentoring
November 21, 2024
3:00-4:00pm (ET) In-person only event.
Speed mentoring will start at 3:30pm
Social Hour: open to all
Speed Mentoring: registration is now closed.
Complete a MENTOR or MENTEE form by Wed., Oct. 16, 2024
Note the flipped order of events! For this year only: the social hour and speed mentoring will take place before the panel and presentation of travel awards.
Ground rules for speed mentoring:
this is a one-time session (i.e., the mentor is not signing on for a longer-term mentoring relationship);
the mentee should come with a specific question or two to guide the session and make the most of it;
the mentee should send the mentor a CV and the question(s) ahead of time, but not expect that the mentor will have read this information prior to the meeting; and
the information shared during the session is to be kept completely confidential.
Both mentors and mentees from the previous sessions have reported finding the experience to be very useful. This is a program for scientists of all gender identities, for both mentors and mentees.
If you are interested in being a mentor, please complete this MENTOR FORM.
If you are interested in being a mentee, please complete this MENTEE FORM.
All responses are due by Wednesday, October 16, 2024 - Registration now closed.
Note - You may wish to sign up as BOTH a mentor and a mentee. For example, a first-year professor may wish for mentoring around earning tenure AND may be positioned well to mentor others about choosing thriving in graduate school.
If you are presenting a poster / paper that evening, please check you have no scheduling conflicts before signing up.
At this time, mentoring is open to WiCS members** on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that, given the multiple formats, we may have limited availability this year and will put you on a waiting list if we do not have an opening.
Networking Cluster Event 2024
Through a generous supplement to our conference grant from NSF Perception, Action and Cognition program, WiCS+ is able to support small group networking events during the upcoming meeting of the Psychonomic Society in NYC in November. Imagine “Coffee with the Computational Cognition Crew” or “Appetizers and Attention” events.
It is up to each group to self-organize (with some support available from WiCS+; e.g., help create a Google Form to gather information you need) and plan a small gathering during the course of the conference.
WiCS+ will be able to support each Networking Cluster Event at up to $200 for allowable expenses (food and non-alcoholic beverages.)
In order to receive reimbursement for the event, you will need the following:
Prior communication with WiCS+ leadership about the date/time and location of the event
Evidence of an invitation for the event to the full networking hub membership
A list of all attendees of the event including affiliation and career stage
Receipts that clearly indicated food and non-alcoholic beverage purchases
Please use this form to update your Networking Hub affiliation and to express interest in a Networking Cluster Event.
